Why I might be a poker donk myself

A donk is a bad poker player, usually an inexperienced one. I am not really lacking in experience when it comes to poker but I often think of myself as being a donk. Of course there are a lot of different levels in the game so whether I really am one or not depends on the skill level of the guys I am playing with.

The reason that I might be a donk myself when I play poker is that I often make bad bets. In large part this is because I am still learning the intricacies of the game. Every time that I think that I have it figured out there is something new that comes up and catches me off guard. When this happens I almost always end up making a donk bet. You make enough of these and you will soon start to think of yourself as a donk. I actually have quite a bit of experience at poker but I still make bad bets.

The other reason that I may well be a donk is that under the pressure of the game I often make bad bets. It is one thing to know what you should do when you are sitting at home reading books on poker but actually being able to do it in a game when there is money on the line is another thing entirely. I often allow my emotions to get the better of me and I end up making poor decisions. This is what often leads to my making donk bets.

While I still think of myself as being a donk I can take comfort from the fact that everybody has been in my position at some point in time. Nobody is a great player when they first start playing; it takes years to reach that point. Therefore I know that if I keep playing and working on my game I will eventually get to the point where I don't make nearly so many bad bets. You can be pretty sure that I will still make a few but not nearly as many as I do know. The key is to not lose too money while I am getting good.

Of course whether I am a donk or not depends a lot on who I play with. When I play with other guys who are around my skill level it is far less of an issue than it is when I play with really good players. However if I want to get better at the game I have to play with the good players. Therefore I don't worry about whether I am a donk or not, as long as I learn from the mistakes that I make it is not a big deal what people call me.
